Investor In People Awarded!
Following an in-depth review and appraisal of staffing structures, management, and organisational policies and procedures, we were delighted to be recognised as an "Investor In People": a national quality mark for the way in which the charity is run and managed. As far as we know, we are the first independent charity in St Helens to achieve this prestigious honour!

Grant Received!!

Many thanks to the Clothworkers Foundation for approving the bid which Helen (Chief Officer) submitted.

The grant will be used to completely refurbish and modernise the kitchen off the lounge. The kitchen is regularly used by staff and groups to prepare drinks and food and it is now looking a bit tired.

Work will start on 10th December, with new units, tops, and appliances. The whole project, including the floor and walls should be finished very early in the new year.

Fundraising Evening 28th November

The Deafness Resource Centre held a Fundraising Clairvoyance Evening on 28th November, with all proceeds going towards the charity.

Clairvoyance was given from 7.30pm - 10.00pm

Tickets and donations on the evening raised over £600 for the refurbishment of the lounge's kitchen - thank you to everyone for being so generous, and thanks to everyone who came along on the night!

Lottery Launch Event June 2007
Deafened Actor, Tim Barlow, kindly travelled up from London to perform his autobiographical one-man show 'Earful'; his story of how he became deafened when he was a solider in World War II, then chose to leave the army to become an actor.

Tim Barlow

Tim Barlow, Actor

On acting, Tim would say to someone wanting to be an actor "Don't do it! It's a very hard job, and you often have to accept rejection".

When it comes to film or stage, Tim explained that he works in film for the money, and on stage to enjoy himself! (There's too much hanging around when working on a film, which can be very isolating when you are deaf, and everyone around you is chatting away).

On attitudes towards his deafness, he felt that American directors were very upfront, and from the word go, they ask him what he needs (usually a speech to text reporter, as Tim doesn't use sign language or lipreading very well). Whereas British directors tend to get embarrassed or are slightly less understanding of his needs.

The Lottery Said
YES!!
big lottery logo June 2007

The Deafness Resource Centre has successfully received funding from the Big Lottery!

Helen Fitzgerald, Chief Officer is over the moon with the good news:

"This funding allows us to continue and further develop the excellent work of our Advocacy Service. It enables us to identify and work with the more isolated members of our D/deaf community.

"We look forward to this challenging but exciting opportunity, which will raise the profile of the needs and rights of D/deaf people living within our local community."
