| About Us |
The Deafness Resource Centre provides services that aim to empower, support and enhance the quality of life of Deaf people. St Helens and District Society for Deaf People was established in St Helens in 1928. The organisation set up the Deafness Resource Centre to meet the growing needs of Deaf people in St Helens. The organisation is managed by a committee made up of Deaf and hearing people. Currently, there are approximately 26,000 people in St Helens with some form of deafness - they could be your friends, family, customers, or visitors. The Deafness Resource Centre is here to offer services to deaf people, and also to develop other people's services to help them to become more deaf aware. Poem by Paulina Bishop, 1986 My precious little boy, who brings me pain and joy, who shares with me a place, a different sort of space.
With childish wonder he takes life in and in his impish little grin, I see an insect on the ground, I watch the TV with no sound,
I talk to him with my hands, He looks up and he understands. He is my son you see His name is Jeremy He's not like you and me
For him the wind blows quietly Waves crash in silence on the shore There is no slamming of the door The pocorn pops soundlessly
You see, he is not like you and me, He is my son Jeremy,
And he is Deaf.
